From the commencement of the project until 1996, the JKMRC was the only research contractor in the project.

During this period of the project the JKMRC provided all the technical research input in all modules of the project. A significant working relationship was established between all parties in this project, ie sponsors, AMIRA and JKMRC, with sponsors commonly asking and expecting JKMRC to identify the new technical targets and direction for the project.

In 1996 a very productive collaboration between JKMRC and University of Cape Town (UCT) developed. Whilst this was principally in the flotation area it has grown to other discipline areas including comminution. The collaboration between these institutions is now very well established, provides significant technical synergy to the project and has also been the impetus to securing the significant South African mining industry support which the project currently enjoys.

At the beginning of the P9M extension (January 2000) McGill University in Canada joined the research team.

Over the years, there has been a very healthy and timely turnover of staff in the project, continually providing new initiatives to the program. Students involved in the project originate from universities worldwide and are often seconded from sponsors. Students completing their MSc and PhD studies are highly sought after by the industry.
